Velah is …
Velah creates atmospheric sonic landscapes that coalesce around ardent melodies and introspective themes. Formed in the last days of 2011, the project from Jen Johnson (voice, guitar), Mike Latulippe (drums), Daniel McNair (keys, guitar) and Nick Murphy (voice, guitar) dismantles and reassembles elements of noise-pop, shoegaze, and post-punk with shimmering guitars, lush synths, and a thunderous rhythm section.
Both their live shows and first EP, Black Olympia, (released in May 2012), have earned the band critical praise. The Boston Phoenix has said “…they delivered indie-to-break-furniture-to…culminating in a astral-scraping chord-smashing freak out of gargantuan intensity.” DigBoston calls Black Olympia a “…pinnacle of power and honesty…The album as a whole is a cathartic work, with its combination of haunting riffs and striking vocals so dense that it sticks with you long after you put down your headphones.”
Black Olympia was followed up by the Skeleton House / Rose Wave 7″ single last August, which Paste Magazine premiered online, saying: “The Bostonian rock quartet works in shades, in that their dramatic delivery comes from an acute understanding of the power of pianissimo and forte. This is best exemplified by a strident riff cutting through a cinematic breakdown as well as the gospel according to Jen Johnson’s otherworldly pipes. Velah’s songs are four-minute sojourns that carry the weight of a symphony blasting through a single guitar amp.”
This winter, Velah released Knotted, a free digital single & acoustic video package and is currently working on new material.
